Riquewihr village lanes

Riquewihr, consistently listed among France's Plus Beaux Villages, is a 14th–16th-century walled Alsatian wine village in the Haut-Rhin whose painted medieval houses line a single pedestrian main street and a network of narrow back lanes. The primary photography composition runs the length of the Rue du Général de Gaulle, looking north from just inside the southern Dolder gate arch toward the Dolder tower at the far end — approximately 300 metres of unbroken painted facades, exposed timber frames, and deep-set doorways that compress into a compelling frame at 50–85mm. Side lanes such as the Rue des Ecuries and Rue des Juifs offer narrower perspectives with asymmetric overhanging rooflines. Morning golden hour from the east illuminates the east-facing facades from 07:00 to 08:30 in summer. The village opens to visitors from around 09:00, after which the main street becomes progressively more crowded. October brings harvest baskets, vine colour overhanging the outer walls, and the Alsatian Vendanges festival on the third Sunday of the month, featuring costumed parades through the medieval lanes. December brings one of Alsace's oldest Christmas markets, with illuminated facades and window displays. Tripods are permitted in the pedestrian lanes outside market operating hours; during peak December market days the lanes become too crowded for practical tripod use. No admission fee for the village; a car park is available at the southern entrance.
