The Astronomical Clock of Strasbourg Cathedral (Horloge Astronomique), housed in the south transept of Notre-Dame Cathedral at Place de la Cathédrale in the Bas-Rhin department of the Grand Est region, is one of the most celebrated examples of precision astronomical and mechanical engineering in the world. The current clock is the third major mechanism to occupy this location, succeeding a Gothic clock of around 1352 and a Renaissance instrument constructed in the 1570s by the mathematician Conrad Dasypodius and the clockmakers Josias and Isaac Habrecht. The Renaissance clock fell silent by the early 17th century, and after nearly two centuries the city commissioned the Alsatian watchmaker Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué to reconstruct a fully functioning mechanism. Schwilgué's clock, completed between 1838 and 1843, retained the original 16th-century carved and painted case — measuring approximately 18 metres in height and occupying the full width of the south transept pier — while installing an entirely new movement of extraordinary technical sophistication. The mechanism displays time simultaneously on dials calibrated to solar, sidereal, and mean time; tracks the positions of the Sun, Moon, and five visible planets; calculates the moveable feast of Easter and the full ecclesiastical calendar; and models the phases of the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, and the precession of the equinoxes. A separate automaton mechanism operates once daily at 12:30, when a procession of carved figures representing the four ages of human life passes before a figure of Christ, a mechanical cock crows three times, and the hours are struck by the figure of Death wielding a bone. The painted panels of the original Renaissance case depict scenes from classical astronomy and include prominent portraits of Copernicus and Euclid, reflecting the Reformation-era synthesis of humanist scholarship and religious iconography. The clock was listed as a French historic monument in 1901. A dedicated admission of €3 is levied for the 12:30 mechanism display.
