Champagne Vineyard Walk — Montagne de Reims

The Champagne Vineyard Walk on the Montagne de Reims is a scenic 12 km loop through premier cru and grand cru Champagne vineyards within the Parc naturel régional de la Montagne de Reims in the Marne department of the Grand Est region, northeastern France. The park's hillsides, houses, and Champagne cellars were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 as part of the Champagne Slopes, Houses and Cellars nomination. The route departs from the Phare de Verzenay — a full-scale lighthouse incongruously set among the vines on the open plateau, now housing the Musée du Champagne wine museum — and loops through the grand cru villages of Verzenay and Verzy, the Faux de Verzy forest, and back across the open vine-covered plateau. The terrain is gentle and undulating, remaining within an elevation band of roughly 150–288 m with well under 200 m of total ascent. The surface combines tarmac village lanes, wide compacted gravel agricultural tracks, and narrow grass paths between vine rows. The Faux de Verzy — a naturally occurring grove of dwarf twisted beech trees (locally called faux) that grow in mushroom-shaped forms reaching only 3–4 m — is the ecological highlight of the route and one of only two such groves in the world; the site has been protected since the 7th century when Benedictine monks first documented it. The grove is freely accessible and deeply atmospheric at all seasons. The Phare de Verzenay museum charges admission (approximately €5/~$5.50 in recent seasons; confirm locally). The vineyard paths and agricultural tracks cross active classified parcels; walkers must stay on marked routes during the growing season (May–September). No public transport serves Verzenay directly; a car from Reims (15 km, approximately 20 min) is required. Several grower-producer domaines in Verzenay and Verzy offer cellar-door tastings by appointment. No permit is required.
