Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle Loop (from Kintzheim)

The Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle loop from Kintzheim is one of the most popular half-day hikes in the Alsace section of the Grand Est region, combining medieval architecture with forest paths and panoramic views over the Rhine plain. The trailhead is the free car park in Kintzheim village, on the Route des Vins d'Alsace roughly 12 km north of Sélestat and 5 km east of the castle. The 8 km route climbs 350 m through predominantly beech and fir forest on well-maintained Club Vosgien-marked paths to reach the imposing silhouette of Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg at 756 m. The medieval fortress, originally built in the 12th century and extensively rebuilt for Kaiser Wilhelm II between 1900 and 1908, is now a monument historique administered by the Bas-Rhin department. The trail surface is a mixture of packed earth, exposed tree roots, and occasional short paved sections near the castle access road; hiking shoes rather than heavy boots are sufficient. The ascent is gradual for most of its length, with a steeper final approach through the eastern forest. From the castle walls, the view sweeps over the Plaine d'Alsace; on clear days the horizon extends to the Black Forest and — in exceptional visibility — the Swiss Alps. The castle itself is a separately ticketed heritage site, with admission approximately €12 for adults in recent seasons (verify current rates and seasonal hours at chateau-haut-koenigsbourg.fr before visiting). A pleasant descent variant uses a different Club Vosgien-waymarked forest path on the southern flank, returning to Kintzheim through oak woodland and vineyard edges to complete the loop. A seasonal shuttle bus runs from Sélestat SNCF station to the castle in summer (verify schedule and price at selestat-alsace.fr). The adjacent Stork Park (La Cigogneraie) at Kintzheim village can be visited before or after the hike. No permit is required for the trail. IGN map 3716ET covers the area.
