Grand Ballon Summit Loop

The Grand Ballon, at 1,424 m, is the highest peak in the Vosges massif and the most commanding summit in the Grand Est region of northeastern France. The standard loop departs from the Col du Grand Ballon car park on the D431 Route des Crêtes, with free parking available; the nearest town is Cernay, roughly 15 km by winding mountain road. No public transport serves this section of the Route des Crêtes, so a private vehicle is required. The round trip covers approximately 12 km with around 600 m of ascent from the car park, which already sits at roughly 1,150 m, meaning much of the lower climbing is completed by road. The route is waymarked with Club Vosgien red-stripe blazes and combines wide ridge paths, short grassy ramps, and — on the final approach — open rocky slopes with patches of scree. Conditions underfoot are generally sound, but the upper section is exposed to westerly winds and becomes slippery when wet or icy. The summit panorama is among the finest in the Vosges: on a clear day the view extends from the Bernese Alps and Swiss Jura in the south, across the Rhine plain to the Black Forest, and north along the full Vosges chain. A radar globe and telecommunications mast mark the top; the Club Alpin Français orientation table identifies distant peaks. A seasonal refuge-café operates near the summit from June to September; outside this period no food or water is available at altitude, and walkers should carry at least 2 litres from the car park. Key landmarks include the roadside chapel, the GR53 and GR531 long-distance trail crossings, and the summit orientation table. In winter the circuit converts to a popular snowshoeing route; north-facing slopes retain snow and icy patches well into May, so microspikes or crampons are advisable for early-season visits. The IGN map 3620OT (Guebwiller–Ballon d'Alsace) covers the area. Mobile coverage is patchy above 1,200 m, so downloading a GPS track offline before departure is prudent. No permit is required.
