Lac de Gérardmer — Plage Municipale

Lac de Gérardmer is the largest natural lake in the Vosges massif in the Grand Est region of France, stretching roughly 2.2 kilometres at an altitude of 666 metres among pine-forested hillsides. The Plage Municipale occupies the western end of the lake along the Promenade du Lac, offering a gently shelving shoreline of coarse grass and fine gravel that slopes into clear, dark-green water tinted by the surrounding conifers. The lakebed is predominantly fine gravel and silt, and water temperatures reach 22–24°C in July and August, making it one of the warmer swimming lakes in the Vosges. The beach stretches roughly 300 metres and is backed by a wide promenade lined with café terraces, restaurants and hire concessions. The atmosphere is firmly family-oriented: a supervised swimming zone is marked with buoys from early July through August, and lifeguards are on duty during peak hours. A children's play area sits directly beside the main swimming zone, and pedalos and rowboats are available for hire by the hour from the lakeside concession. Gérardmer sits in a sheltered north–south valley; wind exposure is moderate, with a light afternoon breeze that suits pedalos and stand-up paddleboards. Waves are negligible and conditions remain calm throughout summer. Restaurant terraces along the promenade serve Alsatian tartes flambées, charcuterie, and fresh Vosges trout. Public toilets are located at both ends of the beach. A large municipal car park is accessible from Rue du 10e B.C.C.A. just off the promenade. Bus line 40 from Épinal SNCF station connects to Gérardmer in approximately 45 minutes at around €3 and deposits passengers within a five-minute walk of the beach. Sun loungers are not available for hire; visitors bring their own mats to the grassy banks. The surrounding Vosges valley offers marked hiking trails departing directly from the promenade, and Lac de Longemer lies just 5 kilometres to the east for visitors wanting to extend their day.
