Obernai Historic Town

Obernai is one of the most complete historic market towns on the Alsace Wine Route, sitting at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile (12 km) in the Bas-Rhin département of France's Grand Est region. The town's medieval fortifications — including five of the original 13 towers — survive almost intact, and the historic centre is pedestrianised within the old walls, creating an authentic urban core with minimal modern intrusion. The central Place du Marché is dominated by the Gothic chapel of Saint-Pierre (16th century, with a striking Renaissance bell-tower), the Kapellturm tower, a 16th-century Renaissance well with a six-bucket pulley mechanism, and the Ancien Corps de Garde (old guardhouse). The surrounding streets — particularly rue du Général Gouraud and rue du Marché — are lined with 15th–17th-century half-timbered houses in the characteristic Alsatian style, several bearing civic inscriptions and painted decoration. Unlike more heavily visited Wine Route villages, Obernai functions as a living town with a weekly Saturday market on the Place du Marché that serves residents as much as tourists. The town has a significant wine economy; the cooperative Vignobles d'Obernai produces wines from the surrounding Schenkenberg vineyard. Traditional winstubs on rue du Général Gouraud offer lunch options. Train connections to Strasbourg (30 min, €5) and shuttle buses to Mont Sainte-Odile in summer make Obernai a practical base for day excursions.
