Haut-Kœnigsbourg is the most visited historic monument in Alsace and one of the best-preserved late-medieval castles in France's Grand Est region, perched on a 757-metre sandstone ridge above the Rhine plain in the Vosges foothills near Sélestat. The castle's recorded history begins in the 12th century, serving as a stronghold for the lords of Hohenstaufen; it was destroyed twice — by Swiss mercenaries in 1462 and by Swedish forces in 1633. Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany commissioned a full architectural restoration between 1900 and 1908 under architect Bodo Ebhardt, producing the imposing red-sandstone complex visible today. The result is controversial among historians but visually spectacular: a keep, a great hall with a monumental fireplace, a rounded bastion, and extensive rampart walks are all fully open to explore. Interior rooms include the imperial apartments furnished in period style, a great hall measuring 15 by 10 metres, and a weapons room containing original medieval armaments. From the ramparts on clear days, visitors can see the Black Forest escarpment across the Rhine in Germany and, on exceptional days, the Swiss Alps. The site draws around 500,000 visitors annually; arriving at opening time (09:00) avoids the worst midday congestion. The free admission for under-18s makes it excellent value for families.
