Bonifacio Clifftops at Sunrise

Bonifacio occupies a narrow limestone promontory at Corsica's southernmost tip, where white chalk cliffs drop 50–70 m sheer to the Strait of Bonifacio. The medieval citadel quarter perches directly on the cliff edge, its pale facades and church towers effectively extensions of the rock formation below. For sunrise photography the primary vantage point is the Chemin des Falaises — a footpath beginning at the marina level and climbing the western cliff face to emerge at the top of the promontory — giving a north-east-facing perspective on the cliffs and the historic buildings above. At sunrise the first light arrives from the east-northeast, catching the face of the cliff in warm raking light and illuminating the limestone buildings from the side. The sea below, channelled through the narrow straits toward Sardinia, catches moving reflections. The optimal framing combines the cliff profile in the mid-distance, a sea foreground with wave motion, and the stacked silhouette of the citadel above. Long exposures of 1–4 seconds with a neutral density filter turn the strait's moderate swell into smooth silk while the buildings remain sharp. Spring and autumn are preferred over summer: in June and July the cliff path fills with walkers by 08:00 and unimpeded tripod use becomes difficult. April, May, September, and October offer sunrise at a more workable 06:30–07:30 window with far fewer people. The limestone surface can be slippery when damp; trail shoes are advisable. The path is publicly accessible with no admission charge; the climb from marina level to the cliff top is approximately 80 vertical metres over 600 metres of path, taking 20–25 minutes. Drone use is restricted over the historic citadel quarter — local bylaws prohibit overflights without municipal authorisation from the Bonifacio mairie. A public toilet is available at the marina near the path entrance.
