Bonifacio Cliff Citadel and Sea Caves

Bonifacio occupies the extreme southern tip of Corsica, perched on white limestone cliffs that fall sheer into the Bouches de Bonifacio strait separating the island from Sardinia. A full-day visit from Ajaccio or Porto-Vecchio reveals one of the most dramatically sited medieval towns in the western Mediterranean. The drive from Ajaccio covers 130 km in roughly 1 hour 45 minutes on the N196; from Porto-Vecchio the approach is just 28 km on the N198 in around 30 minutes. No direct bus connects Ajaccio to Bonifacio, making a hire car the standard choice; taxis from Figari airport (25 km) run approximately €35–€45. The Haute Ville, the historic walled citadel, anchors any visit. A morning start allows time to walk the 13th-century Genoese fortifications, descend the King of Aragon's Staircase — 187 steps carved into the cliff face leading to a sheltered cove — and visit the Église Sainte-Marie-Majeure. On a clear day the Sardinian coast at Santa Teresa di Gallura is visible across the 12 km strait. After midday, a boat excursion into the sea caves beneath the cliffs makes a natural continuation. Several operators on the marina run one-hour circuits through the Grottes Marines, passing the Grain de Sable sea stack and the Piscine des Chevaux tidal pool; departures cluster between 10:00 and 16:00. An alternative afternoon option is a short boat ride to the Lavezzi Islands Nature Reserve — a protected granite archipelago 20 minutes offshore — offering excellent snorkelling in clear shallow water. Lunch in the citadel ranges from Corsican charcuterie and brocciu cheese plates to grilled langoustine on cliff-side terraces; the marina quarter has additional cafés and seafood restaurants. Afternoon light on the white limestone cliffs is especially photogenic, and staying until 17:00 makes the most of the golden hour. Summer weekends bring heavy crowds; a Tuesday or Wednesday visit in late May or early September delivers the same scenery with far fewer visitors. Parking is available at the Haute Ville entrance and near the marina, though spaces fill by 11:00 in July and August.
