Col de Verghio at dawn is a quiet early-morning visit to the highest road pass in Corsica, at about 1,467 metres on the D84 between Porto and Corte. The route starts from the Porto side, climbing through the Aïtone forest of tall Corsican pines and past the village of Évisa, and the drive from Porto takes around an hour and fifteen minutes. Leaving at about 05:30 brings arrival at the summit around 06:30, ahead of walkers, camper vans and day-trippers.

The highest road pass in Corsica. At dawn the granite massif glows copper-red and there is absolute silence. Drive from Porto at 05:30 to arrive at 06:30 before any other traffic.

In the early light the granite massif around the pass takes on a copper-red tone, and the bare rock and scree contrast with the dark pines below. At that hour the air is cold and still, and the silence is broken only by wind and the occasional bell from grazing animals. A large flat rock platform at the summit, signposted from the road, is the best vantage point for the sunrise and for views back down the Golo valley and toward the peaks around Monte Cinto. Photographers value the soft side-light on the rock and the low mist that sometimes fills the valleys. A dawn visit usually lasts one to two hours at the top, with time for a short walk toward the Lac de Nino trail if conditions allow. The pass is normally open from about May to November and closed by snow in winter, so the best months are June to September, when dawn falls between 06:00 and 08:00 on the mountain. The road is narrow with hairpin bends, and driving in the dark requires care. Warm clothing is essential, since temperatures at altitude can be near freezing even in summer.
