The Plage de Loire in Orléans is an annual urban beach event that transforms the quays of the Loire River in the heart of the city, Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, into a seaside-style leisure zone each summer. Operating under the name Orléans Plages, the event installs imported sand along the Quai du Fort Alleaume and adjacent quais on the Loire's south bank, creating a temporary beach with a festive, resort-style atmosphere in the centre of one of France's historic royal cities. The Loire at this point is wide, and the event does not offer supervised river swimming — the Loire current here is strong and bathing is unsafe. Instead, Orléans Plages focuses on urban leisure: volleyball courts, outdoor bars and food stands, deckchairs, and organised activities for children and families. Evening programming typically includes live music and cultural events. The setting frames the beach with views of the Loire's broad sweep and the Pont George V bridge, giving the site a genuinely photogenic urban river backdrop. The event typically runs for several weeks in July and August, and most activities are free or low-cost, making it one of the most accessible summer leisure options in the city. Access is excellent: Tram Line A connects Orléans city centre with stops within easy walking distance of the quays, and the cycling infrastructure along the Loire is well-developed. The beach has no natural character in the traditional sense — it is entirely programmed — but it reflects the French tradition of city-centre summer animation and draws large local crowds who give the Loire quayside a distinctive festive character from late June onwards.
