Plage de l'Écluse (Dinard)

Plage de l'Écluse in Dinard, Ille-et-Vilaine, is the quintessential Belle Époque Breton resort beach — a compact 400-metre arc of pale sand set directly below the town's celebrated promenade of striped beach cabins, grand hotels, and Victorian-era villas. The beach faces northeast across the Rance estuary towards Saint-Malo, whose medieval ramparts and the spire of the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent are clearly visible 3 km away. The water is sheltered by the estuary position and by the Cap Horn headland to the west, making l'Écluse generally calm and suitable for swimming. The famous casino sits directly above the beach and the promenade of Boulevard Wilson is lined with the distinctive striped changing cabins — over 350 of them in blue-and-white patterns — that have become an icon of Dinard's identity since the town developed as a fashionable resort in the late 19th century. Watersports hire, including kayaks and paddleboards, is available from the beach in season. A thalassotherapy clinic is within 100 metres of the sand. Lifeguards patrol July and August. Saint-Malo is accessible by a short ferry crossing from Dinard's embarcadère — 10 minutes across the estuary, operated by Compagnie Corsaire — making a beach visit easily combinable with a half-day in the walled city. Driving from Rennes takes approximately one hour. The nearest train station with regular TER services is Saint-Malo.
