Helsinki is Finland's capital, a seaside city of neoclassical squares, Art Nouveau districts, public saunas and island fortresses, compact enough to explore on foot and by tram.
Helsinki holds the only real late-night scene in Helsinki: cocktail bars around Erottaja, live music in Kamppi and Punavuori, and club nights in Kallio and Sörnäinen. Bars generally close at 02:00-03:00 and clubs at 04:00-05:00. Drinks are expensive by European standards, and anyone who looks under 30 should carry a passport or national ID card. Outside the capital, evenings are quiet: Porvoo's Old Town and Hanko's Eastern Harbour have a handful of pubs and summer terraces.
At a glance
- Peak hours
- Bars fill from 21:00; clubs peak from 00:00 to 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. Last orders are about 30 minutes before closing.
- Average drink
- Beer (0.4 l) €7-9 (about $8-10 USD); cocktail €14-20 (about $16-23 USD); glass of wine €8-12 (about $9-14 USD). Strong alcohol above 5.5% ABV is sold in shops only at state-run Alko stores.
- Dress code
- Smart casual almost everywhere; sneakers are fine. Rooftop hotel bars and some clubs enforce neat-casual dress. Winter coats are checked at the cloakroom (about €3-5 / $3.50-6 USD), and cloakroom fees are often compulsory.
