Lapland Weather & Climate Guide 2025

Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Lapland.

Lapland is Finland's vast, mystical northern wilderness, stretching above the Arctic Circle and home to the Northern Lights, endless fells, pristine national parks, and the legendary Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. This subarctic region offers extraordinary experiences year-round, from dogsled adventures and snowmobile safaris in winter to midnight sun hiking and wild berry picking in summer. Lapland is also the ancestral homeland of the indigenous Sámi people, whose rich culture and reindeer-herding traditions add a unique dimension to any visit.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

November and late April–May

November brings polar night and limited activities before ski season opens properly. Late April–May sees slushy 'mud season' as snow melts, restricting both winter and summer activities.

Climate Overview

Lapland has a subarctic climate with very cold winters and mild summers. Rovaniemi, the regional capital, sits on the Arctic Circle. Temperatures range from -30°C in midwinter to +28°C on summer days, though extreme cold is more common than extreme heat. The region experiences polar night (no sun) in December and the midnight sun (no darkness) in June–July. Annual snowfall is substantial—the ground is typically snow-covered from November through April.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Apr–May

Spring in Lapland is a transitional 'mud season' as snow melts. Late April and May can be slushy and difficult for both winter and summer activities. However, late May brings the first midnight sun and rapidly warming temperatures with beautiful birch tree budding.

Tips: Avoid April if possible; late May is good for early midnight sun and quieter conditions

☀️ Summer

Jun–Aug

Lapland summers are short but intense, with 24-hour daylight in June (midnight sun) and lush green wilderness. Temperatures can reach 25°C in July. The season is excellent for hiking, fishing, canoeing, and wildlife watching, with the unusual experience of hiking at midnight under full sunlight.

Tips: Bring an eye mask for sleeping, strong insect repellent for mosquitoes (Jun–Jul), and light but wind-proof layers

🍂 Fall

Sep–Oct

Autumn (ruska) in Lapland is spectacular—the fell landscape turns brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow, and gold in September, creating one of Finland's most photographed natural phenomena. Northern Lights become visible from mid-September as nights grow dark.

Tips: Visit in mid-September for peak ruska autumn colors combined with the first Northern Lights of the season

❄️ Winter

Nov–Mar

Winter is Lapland's defining season—a magical white landscape with potential -30°C temperatures, the Northern Lights dancing overhead, and snow-covered forests perfect for dog sledding, snowmobiling, skiing, and ice fishing. The polar night (Kaamos) in December creates a unique dark-light atmosphere in Rovaniemi.

Tips: Dress in proper Arctic layers; book winter activities well in advance; the period Feb–Mar offers more daylight than December
