One of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries, with the Burning Bush chapel and icon collection.
Saint Catherine's Monastery stands at the foot of Mount Sinai in the town of St Catherine, South Sinai, Egypt, about 220 km from Sharm El Sheikh. Built in the sixth century under the Emperor Justinian, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress-like granite walls enclose a small complex of chapels, cells, a library and a basilica. Highlights include the Chapel of the Burning Bush, built over the place traditionally identified with the burning bush of the Book of Exodus, with a living bush growing nearby, and the Church of the Transfiguration, with its sixth-century apse mosaic and richly decorated interior of icons, lamps and carved wooden doors. The monastery's icon collection is among the oldest in existence, and the library holds one of the most important collections of early manuscripts outside the Vatican. A small mosque within the walls reflects the long coexistence of communities here. Visitors usually spend 1 to 2 hours, and only a part of the monastery is open to the public. Opening hours are limited to the morning, the monastery is closed on Fridays, Sundays and religious holidays, and the schedule changes, so it is wise to confirm before travelling. Foreign visitors normally pay a small entry fee of about EGP 100-300. Modest dress is required, with shoulders and knees covered. Photography is generally permitted outside but restricted inside the church and chapel, so ask the staff. Most visitors arrive after the Mount Sinai sunrise climb, which means that late morning can be crowded with tour groups. Arriving at opening time gives the quietest experience. The best exterior views are from the road approach and from the surrounding hills.
