The Blue Hole is a famous sinkhole on the Red Sea coast just north of Dahab in South Sinai, Egypt, about 95 km from Sharm El Sheikh. A deep circular pool, roughly 100 metres deep, opens just off the shore and connects to the open sea by a shallow archway known as the Arch, giving it a dramatic dark blue colour against pale reef. It is one of the best-known dive sites in the world and an excellent place to snorkel, and has a reputation for danger among technical divers, which is why many visitors treat it with respect. For snorkellers, the shallow reef along the edge of the hole offers coral gardens, bannerfish, butterflyfish, lionfish and large schools of fusiliers. Entry is free, and the site is lined with Bedouin-style cafes that offer cushions, tea, grilled fish and equipment rental. Most visitors arrive on an organised day tour from Sharm El Sheikh, priced at about EGP 1,250-2,000, or by taxi or bus, with the journey taking around 1.5 hours. A visit generally takes a full day, with snorkelling at the Blue Hole and nearby Bells, followed by lunch in Dahab town. The best photographs are of the deep blue circle from the shore, looking down along the reef edge. Crowds build from mid morning as tours and dive schools arrive, so early arrival gives calmer water and better light. The wind and waves can make entry harder in the afternoon. Visitors should snorkel along the reef rim, not over the deep centre unless experienced, and should never attempt freediving or deep dives without proper training and a certified guide. Reef shoes are useful because the shoreline is rocky, and sun protection is essential.
