Mons Claudianus is a Roman quarry settlement in the Eastern Desert of the Red Sea Governorate, in the Red Sea Hills inland from Safaga. The Romans extracted a hard grey granodiorite here from the first to the third century AD, and columns cut at the site were shipped to Rome for major buildings. The settlement has a walled fort, a large number of ruined dwellings, a well and cistern, a temple area and enormous unfinished columns still lying where workers left them. Access is by 4x4 only, along a long desert drive. Visitors normally hire a driver-guide in Hurghada or Safaga, which costs about EGP 3,500-6,000 (roughly $70-120) per vehicle. The journey from Hurghada takes around two to three hours each way, with the last section on unpaved track. There is informal parking near the fort, and the driver usually handles checkpoint formalities. The walk is short, covering about 2-4 km around the fort and the quarry slopes, and takes 2-3 hours on foot. The site sits at about 700 m above sea level, and elevation gain on the walk is small, so the outing is easy in terms of effort, although the heat and remoteness require preparation. The surface is hard desert ground, scattered stone and quarry debris, with very little shade apart from the shadows of ruined walls. Key landmarks include the fort enclosure, the ruins of the baths and houses, the large column blanks on the slope to the south and the quarry faces higher up. Pottery shards with writing, known as ostraca, were found here and gave scholars detailed insight into daily life. A sensible turn-around point is the unfinished giant column on the quarry slope. No huts, shops or water sources exist at the site, so all water must be carried, usually 3 litres per person. Visitors should take care around unstable walls and leave all artifacts in place.
