Giza is the capital of Giza Governorate on the west bank of the Nile, directly across the river from Cairo, and the home of the Great Pyramids, the Great Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Its Nile-side districts of Dokki, Mohandessin and Agouza and its Pyramids Road corridor make it a practical base for visiting the ancient sites.
Giza's eating splits into three worlds: tourist-facing terraces and hotel dining rooms around the Pyramids (Nazlet El-Semman, Pyramids Road, Mena House), the grill houses and fast-food counters of Mohandessin, Dokki and Agouza, and the working-class street food of Faisal, Haram and Imbaba. Egyptian staples dominate: koshary, ful medames, ta'ameya, charcoal-grilled chicken, kebab and kofta, Alexandrian-style liver sandwiches, fiteer pastry and mezze. The Nile corniche in Dokki and Agouza adds seafood restaurants and boats. Alcohol is served mainly in hotels and a few boat restaurants.
