Aswan is Egypt's southernmost governorate, a sun-drenched city on the banks of the Nile renowned for its ancient Nubian heritage, towering pharaonic monuments, and dramatic desert-island scenery. It serves as the gateway to iconic sites including Philae Temple, the Aswan High Dam, and the legendary Abu Simbel temples.
Top 10 Photo Spots
The most photogenic locations in Aswan.
Philae Temple at Sunrise
The most photogenic ancient site in Aswan — the Greco-Roman temple columns, pylons and colonnaded halls reflected in the still Nile water of Agilkia Island are breathtaking at first light before tour groups arrive
Qubbet El-Hawa Hilltop (West Bank Panorama)
The hilltop above the Nobles' Tombs on the west bank offers the best 360° panoramic photograph in Aswan — the entire length of the Nile, Aswan city, the islands and the golden desert in a single frame
Nubian Village (Gharb Soheil)
The vividly painted facades of Gharb Soheil — turquoise, yellow, orange and blue houses decorated with Hajj pilgrimage paintings, crocodiles and geometric patterns — are among the most photographically distinctive scenes in Egypt
Sunset Felucca on the Nile
The combination of a white-sailed felucca, the orange Nile surface, the silhouetted granite boulders and the pink desert sky over the west bank produces one of the classic Egyptian photographs
Abu Simbel Temple Facade (pre-dawn)
The four colossal seated statues of Ramesses II emerge from darkness in the cool pre-dawn desert light in one of the most powerful photographs in archaeological tourism. The cliff setting and Lake Nasser backdrop are extraordinary.
Aswan Souk at Dusk
As the heat eases and the shop lights come on, the Aswan souk transforms into a photographer's paradise — vivid spice mounds, hanging textiles, the warm glow of oil lamps and the bustle of vendors and shoppers
Nile from the Old Cataract Terrace
The legendary terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel frames an unrivalled view of the Nile amid pink granite boulders, feluccas and the golden western desert. One of Egypt's most iconic travel photography settings.
Philae Sound & Light Show at Night
The dramatic floodlighting of Philae Temple creates vivid colour contrasts against the night sky with the dark Nile surrounding the island — completely different from the daytime experience
Elephantine Island Nubian Houses
The colourful Nubian houses of Siou and Koti villages on Elephantine Island, with their painted doors, potted plants and crocodile murals, offer intimate architectural photography in a genuine living village
Aswan High Dam at Wide Angle
The dam's 3.6 km mass stretching across the Nile framed by the blue Lake Nasser to the south and the green Nile valley to the north is a compelling engineering photography subject

Photography Tips
Get better shots in Aswan.
Golden hour light in Aswan is particularly warm and saturated due to the desert atmosphere — prioritise sunrise and sunset shoots
Temple interiors are dark — bring a fast lens (f/1.8 or f/2.8) or a small LED panel; flash is generally prohibited
The Nile surface acts as a perfect reflector — use this for mirror-image architectural shots at Philae and Kalabsha
Heat haze is significant from April onwards; early morning shooting avoids shimmering air that ruins distant landscape shots
Bring a polariser filter for Nile water shots — it removes glare and brings out the colour contrast between the blue Nile and the ochre desert
Cotton or scarf sun protection for camera equipment — direct Egyptian sun can heat metal bodies and lenses enough to affect performance
Photography Etiquette
Respect local customs while capturing memories.
Always ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Offer to show them the photo.
Never photograph military installations, government buildings, airports, or security checkpoints.
Some religious sites prohibit photography or require fees. Always check before shooting.
Be discrete with expensive camera gear in crowded areas. Don't obstruct traffic or pathways for photos.
