Syndicate Nature Trail

The Syndicate Nature Trail is Dominica's premier birdwatching trail and the most reliable site on the island — and one of the best in the entire Caribbean — for observing both of Dominica's endemic parrot species: the Sisserou (Imperial Parrot, Amazona imperialis) and the Jaco (Red-necked Parrot, Amazona arausiaca). The trail is located in the Syndicate Estate area on the northwestern slopes of Morne Diablotins in the north of the island, within Morne Diablotins National Park. The trail itself is a relatively easy loop of approximately 2 kilometres through mature rainforest and does not involve significant elevation change, making it one of the few highly rewarding nature experiences in Dominica accessible to visitors of moderate fitness. The forest along the trail is old-growth montane rainforest characterised by towering canopy trees, strangler figs, tree ferns, and a dense understorey of heliconia and wild ginger. Dawn visits — arriving between 5:30 and 6:30 AM — offer the highest chance of parrot sightings as the birds leave their overnight roosts and call loudly before dispersing into the forest. The Sisserou, with its deep purple breast and massive bill, is the larger and rarer of the two species. The Jaco is more commonly seen, with a red patch on its neck and typically found in small, noisy flocks. Local birding guides familiar with the trail significantly increase sighting rates and can identify calls as the birds move through the canopy. Beyond parrots, the trail hosts hummingbirds, trembler species, Lesser Antillean flycatchers, Ruddy quail-doves, and forest thrushes. No entrance fee applies to the trail itself.
