Champagne Reef

2-3 hours Adult: $10 (site fee + snorkel rental $15-25) · Child: $5

One of the Caribbean's most unique snorkeling and diving sites, where volcanic gases bubble up from the seafloor creating a 'champagne' effect. The warm underwater vents surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish create an otherworldly experience just offshore from the village of Pointe Michel.

Champagne Reef is widely regarded as one of the Caribbean's most unusual and memorable underwater attractions, located just offshore from the village of Pointe Michel on Dominica's southwestern coast, within the Soufrière Scotts Head Marine Reserve. The site takes its name from the volcanic gas bubbles that constantly percolate up through the sandy seafloor from hydrothermal vents, creating a sparkling curtain of tiny spheres that drift upward around snorkelers and divers — an effect uncannily similar to the inside of a champagne flute. The vents also warm sections of the water, creating pockets noticeably warmer than the surrounding Caribbean, adding a sensory dimension found at very few dive sites globally. The reef itself is vibrant and diverse, with hard and soft coral formations hosting reef fish including parrotfish, damselfish, angelfish, and frequent sightings of sea horses, frogfish, and flying gurnards. Depths at the snorkelling zone range from 1 to 5 metres, while the reef extends to around 15 metres for divers. Entry to the water is from a small black-sand beach or a concrete step provided by the facility. Snorkel gear can be rented on-site for approximately USD 10 to 15. A site fee of around USD 10 applies for day visitors; this is collected at the beachside facility (Champagne Beach Bar & Restaurant). Local dive operators in Roseau and Soufrière offer guided snorkelling and diving trips to the reef. Morning visits between 8 AM and noon offer the calmest sea surface and best underwater visibility, which typically ranges from 15 to 25 metres. The site is accessible without a boat — just a short wade from the beach. Avoid visiting when cruise ships are in port as tour groups can overcrowd the snorkel zone.

FAQ

Do visitors need to be able to dive to experience Champagne Reef?

No. The volcanic bubbles and much of the reef are easily accessible to snorkellers in shallow water (1–5 m). Snorkel gear is available to rent on-site. Scuba diving opens up deeper sections of the reef.

Is Champagne Reef suitable for children?

Children who are confident swimmers and comfortable with a snorkel mask can enjoy the reef in the shallower sections. Life vests are available from the on-site facility. Non-swimmers can wade in to feel the warm volcanic water.

What is the best time of day to visit?

Morning visits between 8 AM and noon offer the calmest seas and best underwater visibility. Afternoon winds can increase chop and reduce visibility.

Accessibility

Entry to the water is via a small beach or concrete steps. The beach area and facility are reachable by road. The underwater experience itself requires swimming ability; there is no wheelchair-accessible in-water viewing option. Visitors with limited mobility can enjoy the beachside bar and views of the site.

When to visit

February to May is ideal — seas are calmest and visibility is at its best. Visit early morning on days when cruise ships are in Roseau to avoid peak crowds at the snorkel zone.
