Hampstead Beach

Beach

A remote, black-sand beach on the rugged northeast coast, backed by lush jungle. Largely unspoiled and uncrowded, reached via a scenic coastal road through Calibishie.

Hampstead Beach is a remote, largely undeveloped black-sand beach on Dominica's northeast Atlantic coast, accessible via a scenic winding road through the village of Calibishie in the Saint Andrew Parish. The beach sits at the mouth of the Hampstead River where the river meets the sea, creating a sheltered section of calmer water alongside the wilder Atlantic surf beyond. The surrounding landscape is dramatically beautiful — steep jungle-covered hills descend directly to the beach on the inland side, with coconut palms leaning over the dark sand and driftwood occasionally washed in by Atlantic swells. The beach is characterised by its almost complete absence of commercial development: no bars, no sun-lounger rental, no tour groups. Visitors experience one of the few genuinely unspoiled stretches of coastline in the Caribbean. The dark volcanic sand contrasts sharply with the turquoise and deep blue of the sea in sunlight, creating a striking visual composition that makes Hampstead popular among photographers despite its remoteness. The river mouth provides a sheltered, shallow area where children and non-swimmers can safely play while stronger swimmers can venture further into the Atlantic, though currents beyond the river mouth can be powerful and should be respected. Fishing boats from the nearby community occasionally launch from the beach. The drive from Calibishie takes 10 to 15 minutes on a rough coastal road that requires care in wet conditions. There are no facilities on the beach itself — visitors should bring food, water, and sun protection.
