Freshwater Lake

Nature

The largest freshwater lake in the Eastern Caribbean, nestled within Morne Trois Pitons National Park at 2,500 feet. A serene volcanic crater lake surrounded by cloud forest, accessible via a scenic hiking trail.

Freshwater Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Eastern Caribbean, situated at approximately 762 metres (2,500 feet) above sea level within Morne Trois Pitons National Park in Dominica's central highlands. The lake occupies a volcanic crater surrounded by cloud forest on three sides, with the caldera rim providing natural shelter that keeps the surface often calm and mirror-like in the early morning. The access road from Laudat, a small mountain village approximately 8 kilometres east of Roseau, brings visitors within a short walk of the lake shore — a 10 to 15-minute gentle descent from the road. The lake itself measures roughly 600 metres across at its widest point and holds considerable depth in its centre. The surrounding cloud forest is characterised by montane vegetation including stunted mossy trees, wild orchids, ferns, and bromeliads that thrive in the high humidity. Birdwatching along the lakeshore path is excellent — the Sisserou and Jaco parrots are occasionally spotted in the canopy above, while herons and egrets feed at the water's edge. The lake is connected by trail to Boeri Lake, the island's highest lake, via a 1.5 to 2-hour hike further up the mountain. This combined trail passes through some of the most pristine cloud forest on the island and is one of Dominica's best half-day walking routes. A national park fee of USD 2 per person applies. The setting is particularly dramatic at dawn when the lake often sits above or within cloud layer, and at clear midday when the surrounding forest reflects off the still water. Fishing is not permitted within the lake.

When to visit
