Superkilen Urban Park

Superkilen is a linear urban park on Nørrebrogade in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, Denmark, designed as a showcase of objects from many countries. The park is divided into three zones: the Red Square, a sports and culture area covered in red surfacing; the Black Square, a social plaza with black-and-white patterned ground and a fountain; and the Green Park, a lawn for picnics and play. Benches, signs, lamps and sculptures sourced from the nationalities of local residents give it a global feel. Photographically it is a strong graphic subject. The Red Square provides saturated colour and bold white road-marking lines that act as leading lines, while the Black Square gives high-contrast patterns and the Green Park offers softer relief. Shooting from the red square end with the road markings running into the distance gives a classic composition. Morning and golden hour give long shadows and even colour, but the surfaces also take hard midday light well because the strong colours hold up under contrast. April to October gives green grass and active public life, and people using the park add scale and activity to the images. Crowds are modest, since the park is a local space rather than a tourist attraction, though weekends bring families and sport. Tripods are fine on the open surfaces if they do not block users, and the location has no formal restriction. Drone flights are restricted in the city without authorisation. Entry is free and the park is open at all hours. Public toilets are not guaranteed within the park, but cafes on Nørrebrogade offer restrooms for customers. A wide-angle lens exaggerates the lines and fills the frame with colour.
