Academie des Beaux-Arts

The Academie des Beaux-Arts occupies leafy grounds on Avenue des Huileries in Gombe and has trained Congolese painters and sculptors since its founding in 1943, making it one of the oldest art schools in Central Africa. The grounds function as an open-air sculpture park, with around forty student and faculty works, ranging from figurative wood and stone carving to more abstract metal pieces, set among ponds, shaded paths, and benches across the campus. An exhibition hall on-site displays paintings by current students and graduates, covering styles from traditional Congolese motifs to contemporary abstraction, and works are typically for sale directly from the artists. Visitors usually spend 45 minutes to an hour and a half walking the sculpture grounds and the exhibition hall, with time to talk with students about their work if any are present and willing. The academy is most active on weekday mornings during the school term, when students work outdoors on larger sculpture pieces and the grounds feel like a working studio rather than a static display; visits during school holidays or late afternoons may find fewer students around. The gardens themselves, with mature trees and small ponds, offer a quiet, shaded contrast to the density of central Kinshasa, and several vantage points along the main paths give clear views of multiple sculptures without backlighting from the sun. Because there is no formal gate or ticket booth, crowds are rarely an issue; the main variable is how many students happen to be working on a given day, which is generally higher during the academic term than in vacation periods.
