The House of Dionysos sits inside Paphos Archaeological Park in Kato Paphos, Cyprus, and is known for some of the finest Roman floor mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean. Dating from the second to fourth centuries AD, the floors depict mythological scenes, hunting episodes, seasons and the god Dionysos himself, in tiny stone tesserae of ochre, black, white, blue and red.

The frame on offer is a series of floor-level compositions: overhead views of whole panels from the raised walkways, and close studies of faces, animals and vine borders. Because the mosaics lie flat, the main photographic task is to control reflections, angle of light and perspective distortion rather than to find a distant viewpoint.

Light is the deciding factor. Much of the house is partly open to the sky beneath protective roofing, so shafts of direct sun can create hard, contrasty patches across the floors. Morning is generally best, because the light is lower, softer and more even before the strongest midday sun enters the courtyards, and because the park is quietest then. Overcast days are an advantage, since they remove glare from the polished tesserae and bring out colour. The site is open all year, so seasons matter mainly for temperature and crowds: spring and autumn are comfortable, while summer midday is hot and exposed.

Photography without flash is permitted for personal use, and flash is not allowed because it can harm the mosaics and creates glare. Tripods are generally not suited to the narrow raised walkways, and larger equipment or professional shoots may require permission from the Department of Antiquities, so visitors should ask at the ticket office. The park charges an entry fee that covers the House of Dionysos and the other sites in the complex. Drones are regulated in Cyprus and are not appropriate over an archaeological site without specific authorisation. Tour groups move through at set times in late morning, so arriving shortly after opening gives clear walkways and unobstructed overhead angles. The walkways are narrow in places, so visitors should wait for a gap rather than lean over rails. Shade, drinking water and toilets are available near the park entrance, and a visit combines naturally with the nearby Villa of Theseus, House of Aion and Roman Odeon for further architectural and mosaic photography.

Highlights

  • Overhead panels of Roman floor mosaics from raised walkways
  • Close studies of Dionysos scenes, animals and vine borders
  • Soft morning light with fewer tour groups
  • Combined visit with the nearby Villa of Theseus and Odeon

Tips for visiting

  • Switch off flash completely; it is not permitted and causes glare on the tesserae.
  • Use a 35mm or 24-70mm lens and keep the camera parallel to the floor to limit distortion.
  • A circular polariser reduces glare on polished stones in bright patches.
  • Raise ISO and use a steady grip rather than a tripod on the narrow walkways.
  • Arrive at opening to avoid late-morning tour groups.

When to visit

Early morning on weekdays, in any season. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures.

Accessibility

The mosaics are viewed from raised walkways on largely level paths, so no hike is required. Some surfaces are uneven and the park is exposed, so wheelchair users may find parts of the route challenging.

Frequently asked questions

Is flash allowed at the House of Dionysos?

No. Photography is allowed without flash, which can damage the mosaics and cause glare.
