The first hour of the 12-kilometre return route is relatively flat as the canyon narrows and deepens. Rock climbers from across Europe frequent the lower gorge walls, which feature hundreds of bolted sport routes on polished limestone faces. After approximately 2 kilometres, the track reaches a system of old Yugoslav military tunnels bored through the rock — part of a Cold War-era underground installation now partially open to explore. A flashlight or headlamp is necessary to navigate this section safely.
Beyond the tunnels the valley opens onto forested slopes and the trail begins its sustained 750-metre climb through beech and black pine forest. The Lugarnica mountain hut, positioned roughly at the midpoint of the upper section, offers seasonal refreshments and a covered rest area from June through September — one of the few shelter points along the route. Above the hut, the trail continues to alpine meadows on the upper Velebit plateau, where views open across the Dalmatian coast and the island of Pag. A signed side trail leads to Manita Peć cave, which requires a licensed park guide and a separate entry ticket; guided cave visits are offered once or twice daily in summer.
The trail surface in the lower gorge is compact gravel and rock. Upper sections transition to forest earth with significant loose rock and root exposure. No water sources exist along the main trail above the gorge stream; the stream itself is not recommended for consumption without filtration. Descent follows the ascent route in reverse. Trekking poles reduce knee strain significantly on the loose upper sections.
