Opatija Lungomare Promenade

The Lungomare is a coastal promenade extending 12 kilometres along the Kvarner Bay shore in northwestern Croatia, connecting the fishing village of Volosko in the north to the resort town of Lovran in the south, passing through the centre of Opatija. Constructed between 1885 and 1911 under Austro-Hungarian administration, the Lungomare was designed as a leisure walkway for the Habsburg aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie who made Opatija the fashionable winter health resort of the era, earning it the nickname the Austrian Riviera. The promenade is paved throughout in stone and runs close to the sea, sometimes at water level and sometimes elevated on a low wall above rocky shore, with periodic stairs descending to swimming platforms and rocky bathing entries. Along the route, Habsburg-era villas in eclectic, neogothic, and art nouveau styles stand behind manicured gardens; the most celebrated is Villa Angiolina, whose grounds now form Opatija's largest public park with century-old exotic trees, a glass house, and the Croatian Tourism Museum. The famous sculpture of the Maiden with the Seagull (Djevojka s galebom) stands on a rock in the sea near the park, serving as Opatija's unofficial emblem since 1956. Cafés, hotels, and restaurants along the promenade between Volosko and Opatija centre represent a concentration of quality dining options. The full Lungomare walk from Volosko to Lovran takes approximately 3 hours one way at a comfortable pace; many visitors walk a section and return by bus.
