Elaphiti Islands

The Elaphiti Islands are an archipelago of 14 islands and islets in the Adriatic Sea immediately northwest of Dubrovnik, Croatia, of which only three — Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan — are permanently inhabited. The islands were historically administered by the Dubrovnik Republic and retain architectural traces of that era in the form of Gothic summer villas, Romanesque churches, and fortified watchtowers. Car-free Lopud is the most visited island in the group, its single village arrayed around a broad bay with a waterfront promenade overlooked by a Renaissance monastery. Lopud's Šunj beach on the island's southern coast is one of the few sandy beaches in the broader Dubrovnik area, a rarity on this predominantly rocky and pebble coastline, and becomes a destination in its own right during summer. Šipan is the largest inhabited Elaphiti island and the most agricultural, with olive groves, vineyards, and two villages — Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ — connected by a 6-kilometre road that can be cycled or walked. Koločep is the smallest and closest to Dubrovnik and has two villages, excellent snorkelling in a Blue Lagoon cove, and small sandy beaches of its own. The Three Islands tour, operated by daily excursion boats from Dubrovnik Old Harbour, is the standard way to visit all three major islands in a single day, spending roughly 1.5–2 hours on each. Individual ferry services operated by Jadrolinija also connect Dubrovnik to each island separately, allowing independent multi-day island hopping.
