The Cranky Croc Hostel

The Cranky Croc Hostel is a long-running backpacker hostel at Calle 12D No. 3-46 in La Candelaria, Bogota's historic centre. It lies within a 10-minute walk of the Gold Museum and the Botero Museum, and close to Plaza de Bolivar, Chorro de Quevedo and the cafes, murals and street life of the old town. La Candelaria is compact and best explored on foot by day, although visitors are generally advised to use taxis after dark. El Dorado airport is reached by taxi or ride-hailing, and the journey depends on traffic.

The hostel has a lively social scene that has built its reputation among independent travellers. Accommodation consists of Mixed Dorms and Private Rooms, so guests can choose between the cheapest shared beds and a more private option. The building uses common areas to encourage interaction, and the setting in a historic neighbourhood gives it a strong sense of place.

Amenities include a bar, a shared kitchen, a common room, wifi and a tour desk. The tour desk is useful for arranging city walks, graffiti tours, day trips to places such as the Zipaquira salt cathedral, and other excursions without needing to shop around. The bar creates a social hub in the evenings, and the shared kitchen lets guests prepare their own meals. There is no restaurant, pool or spa.

The service character is informal and backpacker-oriented, aimed at younger travellers, solo visitors and groups on a budget. Prices run from about COP 45,000 for a dorm bed to around COP 200,000 for a private room, depending on season and demand. Guests should use lockers for valuables and remain aware of belongings in crowded areas, since petty theft is a known concern in tourist zones. The altitude of about 2,600 metres makes evenings cool, and rooms in older buildings can be cold, so warm clothing is advisable.
