Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO)

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá, known as MAMBO, is Colombia's modern art museum, located at Calle 24 No. 6-00 in the Santa Fe area near the Eje Ambiental. Since 1979 it has occupied a red-brick building designed by the architect Rogelio Salmona, whose use of brick, courtyards and interlocking volumes is a draw in its own right. The museum sits on the Calle 26 cultural axis, close to the Museo Nacional and the Planetario.

The permanent holdings cover Colombian and Latin American art from the 1950s onward, including painting, sculpture, photography and works on paper. The upper galleries run a rotating programme of contemporary exhibitions that change several times a year, and a small cinema screens film cycles and cultural events. Visitors can also see the building's terraces and interior circulation spaces, which are designed to frame light and views of the city.

A visit typically takes one to one and a half hours. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00AM to 6:00PM and Sunday from 12:00PM to 5:00PM, and closed on Mondays. Adult admission is COP 12,000, with a two-for-one offer on Tuesdays for online purchases, and COP 8,000 for students, teachers, visitors over 60 and children under 8. Tickets can be bought through the museum's online shop.

Crowds are light for most of the week, and weekday afternoons are often nearly empty. Sundays and exhibition openings draw more visitors. The museum is about five minutes on foot from the Centro Memoria and Las Aguas TransMilenio stations. Combining it with the Museo Nacional, the Planetario and the Parque de la Independencia makes a productive half-day route through this part of the city. Photography is often allowed in the permanent collection, while temporary exhibitions may restrict it, so signs should be checked.
