Shaoxing travel guide: where to stay, what to do and where to eat in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, China.
Shaoxing is a canal-laced historic city in northern Zhejiang, about 60 km east of Hangzhou, and one of the cradles of Yue culture. The state of Yue made its capital here in the 5th century BC under King Goujian, and the city took its present name in 1131 during the Southern Song. It is the hometown of the writer Lu Xun and of the revolutionary Qiu Jin, the setting of the Orchid Pavilion where Wang Xizhi wrote his famous calligraphy in AD 353, and the home of Shaoxing huangjiu, the amber rice wine that is among China's oldest. Visitors come for stone-arch bridges and black-awning wupeng boats, the Song-era romance of Shen Garden, the tomb of the legendary flood-tamer Yu the Great, and the lakes and quarries of Keyan and East Lake. This guide covers the best hotels, attractions, restaurants and experiences in Shaoxing.
