Wuzhen Water Town

Wuzhen Water Town straddles a network of canals in Tongxiang, on the Jiaxing plain between Hangzhou and Shanghai, and is split into two separately ticketed scenic areas: Dongzha, the older and more residential eastern district, and Xizha, the larger western district that has been developed for overnight stays. Visitors walk along stone-paved lanes beside black-tiled Ming and Qing-dynasty houses, crossing arched stone bridges over the canals and passing workshops demonstrating indigo-dye cloth printing, rice-wine brewing, and traditional woodblock printing. Wooden gondola boats ferry visitors along the main waterways for an additional fee, offering a low vantage point on the canal-front architecture that is hard to get from the footpaths. A half-day covers Dongzha's compact lanes, while Xizha, with its shops, guesthouses and evening lighting, rewards a longer stay of four to six hours or an overnight stop, since the town is at its most atmospheric after dark when red lanterns reflect on the water. Daytime crowds peak from late morning to mid-afternoon, especially on weekends, when tour groups from Shanghai and Hangzhou fill the main canal-front lanes; the town empties out considerably by early evening as day-trippers leave and only overnight guests remain. The best photo angles are from the stone bridges looking down the canal axis, and from the covered wooden corridor along Xizha's main waterway at dusk. Because much of Wuzhen has been restored and rebuilt, some sections read as reconstructed rather than original, though the layout and canal system follow the historical water-town plan.
