Yunnan Shopping Guide 2025
Find the best markets, malls, and unique souvenirs in Yunnan.
Yunnan is China's most ethnically diverse province, home to 26 of China's 56 recognized ethnic groups. Stretching from subtropical jungles in the south to Tibetan plateau landscapes in the north, it offers an extraordinary range of landscapes, cultures, and experiences. Famous for Lijiang's ancient town, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Xishuangbanna's tropical rainforests, Yunnan is a destination unlike anywhere else in China.
What to Buy
Unique local products worth bringing home.
Pu'er Tea (Aged)

Yunnan Ham (Xuanwei Ham)
Vacuum-packed aged Yunnan ham — a premium cured pork product comparable to Spanish Jamón, perfect as a food souvenir. Available whole or in pre-sliced gift packages.
Yunnan Tie-Dye (Bai Batik)
Traditional Bai minority tie-dye fabric in indigo and white, featuring traditional geometric patterns. Available as tablecloths, wall hangings, scarves, and bags.

Art inspired by the unique Naxi Dongba pictographic writing system — the world's only living pictographic script. Available as prints, books, and hand-painted scrolls.
Tibetan Jewelry and Turquoise
Handcrafted silver jewelry set with turquoise, coral, and semi-precious stones in Tibetan traditions. Bracelets, rings, prayer beads, and pendants.
Dali Marble
Beautiful natural marble unique to the Dali area, featuring naturally occurring scenic patterns that resemble mountains and clouds. Available as coasters, frames, decorative pieces, and paperweights.
Yunnan Dried Wild Mushrooms

Experience authentic local shopping culture.
Kunming Dounan Flower Market
The world's largest cut flower market handling over 6 million stems daily, also featuring extensive sections selling dried flowers, botanical products, Yunnan mushrooms, and specialty food items. An extraordinary sensory experience.
Nanping Pedestrian Street Market (Kunming)
Kunming's main shopping boulevard with a dense concentration of Yunnan specialty shops, tea merchants, handicraft stores, and street food vendors. The most convenient place for one-stop souvenir shopping.
Yunnan Curio Building (Wenwan Cheng)

Lijiang Old Town Craft Market
A concentrated cluster of shops selling Naxi crafts, Tibetan jewelry, Yunnan tea, and minority ethnic textiles. Quality varies enormously — look for shops with artisans working on-site.
Shaxi Friday Market
An authentic weekly market in the ancient Tea Horse Road town of Shaxi, where Bai, Yi, and Lisu villagers from surrounding mountains trade produce, livestock, handmade tools, textiles, and crafts in a setting largely unchanged from centuries ago.
Menghun Sunday Market (Xishuangbanna)
A colorful weekly ethnic market where Dai, Hani, Bulang, and Lahu people trade jungle vegetables, tropical fruits, handwoven baskets, Dai textiles, and traditional herbal medicines. One of the most authentic market experiences in Yunnan.

Bargaining Tips
How to negotiate prices in local markets.
Bargaining is expected at street markets, curio shops, and tourist craft stalls across Yunnan
A reasonable starting offer is 50-60% of the asking price; settle around 70-80% for fair value
Fixed-price shops in malls and official stores don't negotiate — look for small artisan shops for bargaining opportunities
Never bargain aggressively or rudely — maintain a friendly tone and smile throughout
Walking away often results in the vendor calling you back with a better price
When NOT to Bargain
- Fixed-price shops and malls
- Government emporiums
- Restaurants and hotels
- Supermarkets and pharmacies
