Yunnan Photography Guide 2025

Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Yunnan.

Yunnan is China's most ethnically diverse province, home to 26 of China's 56 recognized ethnic groups. Stretching from subtropical jungles in the south to Tibetan plateau landscapes in the north, it offers an extraordinary range of landscapes, cultures, and experiences. Famous for Lijiang's ancient town, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Xishuangbanna's tropical rainforests, Yunnan is a destination unlike anywhere else in China.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Yunnan.

1

Black Dragon Pool — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Reflection

📸 sunriselandscape

Yunnan's most iconic photograph: the five-arched Moon Embracing Bridge and pavilion perfectly reflected in the jade-green pool with the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain looming behind. On clear mornings the mountain glows pink in the first light.

Photo tip: Arrive 45-60 minutes before sunrise. Autumn (October-November) offers the best mountain visibility. Calm wind mornings create a perfect mirror surface.
2

Yuanyang Rice Terraces — Sunrise at Duoyishu

📸 sunriselandscape

The most photographed rice terraces in Asia: thousands of mirror-like flooded terraces cascading down mountainsides, reflecting dramatic sunrise skies in shades of gold, crimson, and orange. The flooded season (November-April) is essential.

Photo tip: Stay the night in Duoyishu village for direct viewpoint access. Cloud inversion below the terraces at dawn creates otherworldly mist effects on the best mornings.
3

Three Pagodas — Pond Reflection at Dawn

📸 sunriselandmark

The Three Pagodas of Dali reflected in the sacred pond with Cangshan Mountain's peaks behind, ideally with morning mist drifting between the peaks. The golden light of early morning illuminates the pagoda surfaces beautifully.

Photo tip: The reflection shot requires arriving at the pond access behind the pagodas; enter through the main gate and walk around to find the ideal reflection pool angle.
4

Dongchuan Red Land — Luoxiagou Viewpoint

📸 sunriselandscape

Surreal crimson and ochre terraced farmland stretching across rolling hills, most dramatic when yellow mustard flowers bloom in October-November creating intense color contrast with the deep red iron-oxide soil. Abstract and painterly from above.

Photo tip: October-November is mandatory for color contrast. Stay overnight in Dongchuan to access Luoxiagou and New Village viewpoints at sunrise. The light changes every few minutes.
5

Tiger Leaping Gorge — High Trail Viewpoints

📸 morninglandscape

Vertiginous views from the high trail rim down into one of the world's deepest gorges, with Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains flanking the Jinsha River 2,000m below. The sense of scale and drama is unmatched in Yunnan.

Photo tip: The Tina's Guest House terrace is the single best vantage point along the trail. Early morning light illuminates the western (Jade Dragon) face of the gorge.
6

Lijiang Old Town — Sifang Square at Night

📸 blue_hoururban

The cobblestone Sifang Square and surrounding lantern-lit streets of Lijiang Old Town glow with red lantern light after dark, with the rooflines of traditional Naxi buildings and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain occasionally visible beyond the town.

Photo tip: Blue hour (30-45 minutes after sunset) gives the best balance of sky color and artificial light. Walk north from Sifang Square for quieter, less lit alleys that make for more dramatic photographs.
7

Erhai Lake Sunrise — West Shore

📸 sunriselandscape

The western shore of Erhai Lake provides clear views across the water toward the rising sun over the eastern mountains. Traditional Bai fishing villages, cormorant fishermen, and the backdrop of Cangshan Mountain combine for exceptional sunrise compositions.

Photo tip: Rent a bicycle the evening before to be in position at sunrise. Xiaguan area on the lake's south shore offers clear eastern horizon views.
8

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — Glacier Park Cable Car

📸 morninglandscape

The upper stations of the Glacier Park cable car at 4,506m provide dramatic views of the permanent glaciers and the sweeping panorama of the northern Hengduan Mountain ranges. Views are clearest in the morning before afternoon cloud builds.

Photo tip: Book cable car tickets 1-2 weeks in advance via the official WeChat mini-program. Morning slots (before 11 AM) have significantly clearer views than afternoons.
9

Songzanlin Monastery — Golden Rooftop View

📸 morningcultural

Yunnan's largest Tibetan monastery with golden gilded rooftops set against the blue Shangri-La sky, surrounded by willow trees and fronted by a scenic lake. The frontal view from across the lake is particularly striking.

Photo tip: Arrive at the 7-8 AM morning prayer ceremony for photographs of robed monks in the courtyard. The view from the monastery hill back toward the lake is equally compelling.
10

Lugu Lake — Pig-Trough Boats at Dawn

📸 sunriselandscape

The crystal-clear high-altitude lake at dawn, with traditional Mosuo pig-trough dugout canoes being paddled by local fishermen across still water reflecting the surrounding pine-covered hills and distant Goddess Mountain.

Photo tip: Hire a local Mosuo boatman for a pre-dawn paddle — extraordinary silence and light. The calm morning water creates perfect reflections before wind picks up.

Use a polarizing filter at Erhai Lake and Blue Moon Valley for maximum color saturation in the water

📸

Always ask permission before photographing ethnic minority people in traditional dress — many will expect a small fee

📸

Early morning (before 9 AM) is essential at Lijiang Old Town before tour groups arrive

📸

Drone photography requires permits in most Chinese scenic areas — check regulations and file paperwork in advance

📸

Download and use Amap (Chinese navigation app) to find specific viewpoints and rural photography locations
