Black Dragon Pool — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Reflection

Yunnan's most iconic photograph: the five-arched Moon Embracing Bridge and pavilion perfectly reflected in the jade-green pool with the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain looming behind. On clear mornings the mountain glows pink in the first light.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces — Sunrise at Duoyishu

The most photographed rice terraces in Asia: thousands of mirror-like flooded terraces cascading down mountainsides, reflecting dramatic sunrise skies in shades of gold, crimson, and orange. The flooded season (November-April) is essential.

Three Pagodas — Pond Reflection at Dawn

The Three Pagodas of Dali reflected in the sacred pond with Cangshan Mountain's peaks behind, ideally with morning mist drifting between the peaks. The golden light of early morning illuminates the pagoda surfaces beautifully.

Dongchuan Red Land — Luoxiagou Viewpoint

Surreal crimson and ochre terraced farmland stretching across rolling hills, most dramatic when yellow mustard flowers bloom in October-November creating intense color contrast with the deep red iron-oxide soil. Abstract and painterly from above.

Tiger Leaping Gorge — High Trail Viewpoints

Vertiginous views from the high trail rim down into one of the world's deepest gorges, with Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains flanking the Jinsha River 2,000m below. The sense of scale and drama is unmatched in Yunnan.

Lijiang Old Town — Sifang Square at Night

The cobblestone Sifang Square and surrounding lantern-lit streets of Lijiang Old Town glow with red lantern light after dark, with the rooflines of traditional Naxi buildings and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain occasionally visible beyond the town.

Erhai Lake Sunrise — West Shore

The western shore of Erhai Lake provides clear views across the water toward the rising sun over the eastern mountains. Traditional Bai fishing villages, cormorant fishermen, and the backdrop of Cangshan Mountain combine for exceptional sunrise compositions.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — Glacier Park Cable Car

The upper stations of the Glacier Park cable car at 4,506m provide dramatic views of the permanent glaciers and the sweeping panorama of the northern Hengduan Mountain ranges. Views are clearest in the morning before afternoon cloud builds.

Songzanlin Monastery — Golden Rooftop View

Yunnan's largest Tibetan monastery with golden gilded rooftops set against the blue Shangri-La sky, surrounded by willow trees and fronted by a scenic lake. The frontal view from across the lake is particularly striking.

Lugu Lake — Pig-Trough Boats at Dawn

The crystal-clear high-altitude lake at dawn, with traditional Mosuo pig-trough dugout canoes being paddled by local fishermen across still water reflecting the surrounding pine-covered hills and distant Goddess Mountain.

Dali Ancient City — South Gate at Dusk

The South Gate of Dali Ancient City with its traditional Ming-style tower glowing in golden hour light, with the white walls of the city and distant Cangshan Mountain peaks. The foreground old flagstone street adds historical depth.

Cangshan Mountain — Cloud Inversion from the Ridge

From the Cloud Roaming Path at 2,600m on Cangshan, clouds often fill the valley below at dawn creating a dramatic sea of clouds with Erhai Lake and Dali Ancient City emerging above. One of Yunnan's most spectacular but least predictable photographic opportunities.
