The provincial museum covers Yunnan's ethnic cultures, Dian kingdom bronze-age artefacts, dinosaur fossils and Buddhist art. Entry is free but a passport is needed to register at the gate.

Open-air park on the northern shore of Dianchi Lake with themed villages representing many of Yunnan's ethnic minority groups, with craft displays, song and dance shows and ethnic food stalls.

Haigeng Dam and Dianchi Lake Gulls

A causeway on the northern edge of Dianchi Lake where thousands of red-billed gulls overwinter. The birds usually arrive from mid-to-late October and leave around the end of March; about 39,000 gulls wintered in Kunming in 2022. Feeding and watching the flocks is free.

Essential travel tips

  • Download a VPN before arrival, as many Western websites and apps are blocked in mainland China
  • Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card in advance, as cash and foreign cards are accepted less widely than mobile payment
  • Use the Didi app (supports English) and Amap or Baidu Maps; Google Maps works poorly in China
  • Bring a passport for the Yunnan Provincial Museum and for train ticket purchases
  • Group Green Lake, Yuantong Temple and the zoo in one day, Dianchi Lake sights in another, and treat Stone Forest as its own day trip

Safety information

INFO

Kunming sits at about 1,900 m; most visitors notice only mild breathlessness on the first day, but the sun is strong, so use sunscreen and sunglasses even on cool days

INFO

Carry a passport at all times; hotels, train stations, museums with reservation systems and many attractions scan it, and police can ask to see it

INFO

Pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay where possible, and keep some cash because small noodle shops and markets sometimes refuse foreign cards

INFO

Use Didi or metered taxis; ask for the meter (打表, da biao) and have the destination written in Chinese characters

INFO

Wild mushrooms are a seasonal local delicacy from June to September; poisoning cases are recorded every year in Yunnan, so eat them only at reputable restaurants that cook them thoroughly

INFO

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or boiled water, which hotels provide

INFO

Traffic is the main physical risk: electric scooters often ignore red lights and use the pavement, so look both ways even on one-way streets and zebra crossings

INFO

Avoid zero-fee package tours sold on the street or by cheap hotels; they are built around forced shopping stops for jade, tea and herbal goods

INFO

For hikes at Western Hills, check the weather first; stone steps become slippery in the rainy season from June to September

INFO

Download Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps and a translation app; Google services do not work without a VPN
