Luodai Ancient Town

Luodai Ancient Town, about 18 km east of downtown Chengdu in Longquanyi District, is regarded as China's best-preserved Hakka settlement, with a Qing-era streetscape of guild halls and courtyard houses now lined with shops selling Hakka handicrafts, embroidery, bamboo goods, and local specialty foods such as preserved vegetables and rice wine. As a day-trip destination rather than a downtown mall, the goods here are predominantly local and handmade rather than imported tourist trinkets, though souvenir quality varies and shoppers should compare a few stalls before buying embroidery or woodcraft. Bargaining is common and expected at most stalls, particularly for handicrafts and dried-food items, and cash is still widely used alongside mobile payment, since some smaller vendors may not accept card. The town is quieter on weekdays and considerably busier on weekends and holidays when day-trippers arrive from Chengdu, with food stalls clustered around the main Qing-era gate and the ancestral guild halls. The must-visit corners are the Guangdong Guild Hall, the main Hakka snack street, and the old well square at the town's center.
