Shanxi is a landlocked province on the Loess Plateau of north China, west of the Taihang Mountains and east of the Yellow River. It holds more surviving pre-modern timber buildings than any other Chinese province, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites (the Yungang Grottoes, the Ancient City of Pingyao and Mount Wutai), the cliff-clinging Hanging Monastery, the 1056 wooden pagoda of Ying County, the Qing-era merchant mansions of the Jin traders and the thundering Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River.
Shanxi's nights are low-key and food-led. In Taiyuan, the provincial capital, evenings start at the Liuxiang night market and the lantern-lit lanes of Bell Tower Street and Food Street, then move to small cocktail and whisky bars around Liuxiang, the Maoye Tiandi complex on Qinxian North Street (with its '0351' bar street) and the hotel lounges near Taiyuan MixC. Live-music bars cluster near Maoye Tiandi and the Nanzhonghuan area by Taiyuan South Station. In Pingyao the draw is the illuminated Ancient City itself plus theatre: the immersive 'Encore Pingyao' production just west of the walls and shows at Pingyao Grand Theater. Datong's restored city wall and Drum Tower district are floodlit at night and good for an evening walk. Karaoke (KTV) is the default local night out. Central areas are considered safe for solo visitors; bars generally close around 02:00.

Nightlife tips
Stay safe and have fun.
Pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay; small bars rarely accept foreign cards.
Use DiDi (available in English inside Alipay) for late rides, as Taiyuan's metro and buses do not run through the night.
Book Encore Pingyao tickets a day ahead in summer and on Chinese public holidays, and arrive 30-60 minutes early.
Search venue names in Chinese on Amap or Baidu Maps; many Taiyuan bars sit on upper floors of office or apartment towers.
Baijiu toasts (ganbei) at dinners are common; it is acceptable to sip rather than down each glass.
