Yanmen Pass is a historic Great Wall fortress in the mountains north of Dai County in Xinzhou, northern Shanxi, China, about 20 km from Dai County town. Set in a gap between steep ridges, it was for centuries one of the key frontier gateways guarding the approach to the Central Plains against steppe nomads, and it is associated with the Zhao general Li Mu and with the Yang family generals of Song-dynasty legend. The present fortifications date largely from the Ming dynasty. Visitors enter through a series of gates, including the Tianxian, Diqi and Renhe gates, and walk along stretches of wall that climb the ridge lines, with watchtowers, beacon platforms and a paved military road below. Exhibits and reconstructed buildings describe the pass's military history, and in season there are costume performances and staged displays. From the upper wall sections, views extend across layered mountain ridges and the pass itself, making this a rewarding place for photographs, particularly at sunrise and in autumn clarity. A visit takes two to three hours depending on how much climbing is done, and steps are steep in places. September and October bring clear air and colourful foliage. Summer can be hot and crowded with school groups and tour parties, while winter is cold and windy. Yanmen Pass is usually reached by chartered car from Datong or Xinzhou, or by taxi from Daixian, and is often paired with the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and Wutai Shan.
