Tangyu Hot Springs (Bishuiwan)

Tangyu Hot Springs, also known as Bishuiwan, lies in Tangyu Town in Lantian County, in the hills southeast of Xi'an, and draws on a natural mineral spring recorded in use since ancient times. Unlike the hotel spas found in central Xi'an, this is an open-air hot spring resort where terraced outdoor pools are fed directly by a spring source measured at around 58°C before cooling to bathing temperature across the pool network. The grounds also preserve the historic Daxing Hot Spring Courtyard, a site with eight ancient bathing pools that point to the spring's long history as a bathing destination in the Guanzhong region, predating the area's modern resort development. Facilities include a series of graded outdoor mineral pools of varying temperature, indoor sauna rooms, and slate-bed bathing areas where visitors lie on heated stone slabs rather than soak. The setting is rural and mountainous rather than urban, with the pools arranged into a landscaped valley rather than a single indoor facility, giving it a more relaxed, day-trip character similar to hot spring resorts found elsewhere in China's mountain regions. There is no accommodation-based retreat program attached to the site; it functions as a pay-per-visit bathing resort rather than a multi-day wellness retreat, and there is no dedicated massage-therapist treatment menu in the way a hotel spa would offer. Visitors typically buy a general admission ticket that grants access to the pool circuit, sauna, and slate-bed area, with some resorts of this type in the region also selling upgraded packages that include private pool sections or towel and locker service. Given its distance from central Xi'an, in Lantian County, it is best treated as a half-day or full-day excursion rather than a quick stop, and the surrounding valley scenery is part of the appeal alongside the bathing itself.
