Shaanxi is a landlocked province in north-central China that served as the cradle of Chinese civilization and the eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road. Home to the world-famous Terracotta Army, the Ming-dynasty Xi'an City Wall, and the sacred cliffs of Mount Hua, Shaanxi pairs 3,000 years of imperial history with the hearty noodle-and-lamb cuisine of the Loess Plateau.
Shaanxi spans a temperate, semi-arid climate zone in the Guanzhong Plain around Xi'an, with hot summers, cold dry winters, and moderate rainfall concentrated in July and August. Northern Shaanbei, on the Loess Plateau, is drier and more continental with greater temperature extremes. Southern Shaannan, in the Qinling and Daba mountain ranges around Hanzhong, is milder and wetter, with a subtropical influence that supports rice cultivation and bamboo forest.

Best: March–May and September–November
Best Reason: Spring brings mild, dry temperatures and clear skies ideal for the outdoor Terracotta Army pits and the Xi'an City Wall. Autumn delivers crisp air, minimal rain, and the best visibility for the Mount Hua plank walks and cable car.
Peak Season: July–August (summer) and Chinese National Golden Week (October 1–7)
Avoid: December–February at Mount Hua and outlying areas; late July–August in Xi'an
Avoid Reason: Winter is bitterly cold and dry across the Guanzhong Plain, and Mount Hua's plank walks can close in ice or snow. Mid-summer brings heat, humidity, and periodic heavy downpours that can disrupt outdoor sightseeing.

What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar–May
The most comfortable season for Xi'an sightseeing. Temperatures climb steadily, skies are generally clear, and the plum and peach blossoms bloom at Huaqing Palace and around Mount Li. Dust storms from the Loess Plateau can occasionally reduce visibility in March.
Summer
Months: Jun–Aug
Hot and increasingly humid in Xi'an (32–36°C), with the year's heaviest rainfall in July and August. The Terracotta Army pits have little shade, so midday visits can be uncomfortable. Southern Shaannan around Hanzhong stays greener and slightly cooler.
Fall
Months: Sep–Nov
Shaanxi's best season overall. Temperatures moderate, humidity drops, and the persimmon orchards around Xi'an turn a deep orange in October. Mount Hua's forests show autumn color from mid-October.
Winter
Months: Dec–Feb
Cold and dry in Xi'an, with temperatures regularly dropping below 0°C at night and occasional light snow. Mount Hua's peaks and plank walks can be closed or restricted in icy conditions. Fewer tourists mean shorter queues at the Terracotta Army.
