Shuyuanmen Ancient Culture Street runs from Xi'an's South Gate along a Ming- and Qing-style pedestrian lane whose shopfronts are dedicated to Chinese scholarly and artistic culture rather than general souvenirs. The goods on sale center on the 'Four Treasures of the Study' -- calligraphy brushes, ink sticks, ink stones, and rice paper -- alongside painting scrolls, seal-carving stalls, and antique dealers. Vendor quality ranges from serious, long-established calligraphy and seal shops with skilled in-house artisans to smaller stalls selling mass-produced scrolls and trinkets aimed at passing tourists, so the ratio of authentic craftsmanship to tourist filler depends heavily on which shopfront is entered. Bargaining is customary at the smaller stalls and less so inside the established shops with marked prices; cash and mobile payment (WeChat Pay, Alipay) are both widely accepted, and there is no VAT refund scheme since these are small independent retailers. The street is busiest in the late morning and afternoon, with a relaxed, browsing atmosphere rather than the crowd density of the Muslim Quarter, and a handful of teahouses and snack stalls sit along the route for breaks. The stretch closest to the South Gate arch holds the highest concentration of serious calligraphy and seal-carving shops, while stalls further from the gate lean more toward general antiques and tourist items.
