Hukou Waterfall (Yellow River)

Hukou Waterfall, on the Yellow River at the border of Shaanxi's Yichuan County and Shanxi province, is China's largest yellow waterfall, and its churning, sediment-laden water offers a very different palette from Shaanxi's other photography spots. The main viewing platforms on the Shaanxi bank sit close enough to the falls to frame the full width of the churning drop with the canyon walls as a backdrop, while a lower platform close to the spray allows tighter shots of individual water plumes. The waterfall runs roughly east-west along the river gorge, and midday sun is actually preferred here rather than avoided, since direct overhead light is what produces the rainbow that regularly forms in the waterfall's spray; overcast conditions mute both the water's color and the rainbow effect. Water volume peaks from July through October after the summer rains, producing the most dramatic and widest falls, while a very different subject appears from December through February, when spray freezes into ice formations along the banks and rock ledges. The site's remoteness relative to Xi'an keeps crowds far lighter than the city's landmark attractions, though the main platforms can still fill during national holiday weeks. Tripods are permitted on the viewing platforms, though constant fine spray makes a lens cloth or rain cover essential, and drones face restrictions near this cross-provincial protected river gorge. There is a paid admission to the scenic area, typically around 100 RMB, and additional local transport is usually needed to reach the falls from Yan'an or Xi'an.
