Mount Hua (Huashan)

Mount Hua rises steeply above Huayin City in Weinan Prefecture, its five granite peaks long regarded as one of the most dramatic sacred mountains in China, with narrow plank walkways and chain-assisted cliff paths that draw hikers looking for a physically demanding climb. Cable cars serve both the West Peak and North Peak, letting visitors skip the steepest lower sections, but reaching all five peaks still requires several hours of walking along ridge trails connecting them, including narrow stone-cut staircases with sheer drops on either side. The famous plank walk on cliffs near South Peak, a wooden walkway bolted directly into the rock face with only a harness for safety, is an optional paid add-on for the most adventurous visitors. Many visitors climb through the afternoon and evening, sleep in one of the basic mountain-top guesthouses, then hike to East Peak before dawn to watch sunrise over the surrounding plains, a popular and often crowded ritual. A single-day visit taking the cable cars up and down is possible in about 6-8 hours, but an overnight stay is recommended for anyone wanting the sunrise view without a pre-dawn ascent from the base. Autumn brings the clearest skies and best visibility, while summer sees frequent afternoon cloud cover obscuring the peaks; the trails and cable car queues are busiest during Chinese national holiday weeks.
