A cream-and-yellow Baroque church from 1587 with a gilded altar and an upstairs treasury of sacred art.
St. Dominic's Church, or Igreja de São Domingos, is a Baroque church on Largo de São Domingos, one minute on foot from Senado Square on the Macau Peninsula. Founded by Spanish Dominican friars in 1587 and rebuilt in its present form in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest churches in Macau and part of the UNESCO Historic Centre. The facade is painted a distinctive cream and yellow, with white stucco trim and green wooden shutters, which gives it a lively look against the surrounding plaza. Inside, visitors find a tall nave with a gilded altar, carved wooden ceilings, and statues of Jesus and the Virgin. The church remains active and holds Catholic services, so visitors are asked to dress modestly and keep quiet. On an upper floor, the Treasure of Sacred Art museum displays more than 300 religious objects, including vestments, silver, paintings and sculptures from Macau and the region. A short climb through the church leads up to this museum. The visit usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, with the museum adding about 15 more. The best photo angle is from the plaza looking up at the facade in morning light, and inside from the rear of the nave with the altar centered. Crowds are heaviest around midday when tour groups pass through between Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul's, while early morning is the quietest. The church is open daily from about 8:00AM to 6:00PM, and admission is free. The surrounding square is lined with cafes and shops, and the lane leading to the Ruins is directly behind it. Visitors should avoid walking around during Mass, and flash photography is discouraged. It is an easy stop on a self-guided walk through Macau's historic center, pairing naturally with the nearby Cathedral and Leal Senado.
