Majie Caifan

Majie Caifan (马姐菜饭), or Sister Ma's Vegetable Rice, is a small snack-style restaurant on Baidang Road in Dingshu Town, Yixing, Jiangsu province, China. It specialises in caifan, the vegetable rice that is one of the signature everyday foods of the Yixing area. The shop's best-known dish is the fragrant-snail vegetable rice with salted pork (香螺菜咸肉菜饭), which combines three local elements: greens, cured pork and snails. The rice is cooked with chopped greens until the grains absorb the savoury, slightly salty flavour of the pork fat, and the snails add a mild, sea-like sweetness. A soup of the day is offered alongside, usually a light broth that balances the richness of the rice. The menu is deliberately short and the price low, at roughly CNY 18-35 per person, which suits workers and families who want a fast, filling meal. The dining room is basic, with plain tables, quick service and a purely local clientele; there is no dress code and no notable beverage programme beyond tea and soft drinks. Reservations are not taken. At peak lunch and on weekend evenings, arriving before about 11:30 or 17:30 helps avoid a wait, and the shop operates roughly 10:30-20:00 without a long afternoon break. Baidang Road lies within Dingshu, the ceramics town known for purple-clay teapots, so the shop works as a convenient meal stop between potteries and museums. Visitors who have never tried caifan will find it a straightforward introduction to everyday Jiangnan home cooking: one bowl, one soup, and little ceremony.
