A restored 1.1 km stone-paved street of Ming and Qing shops, tea houses and snack stalls running from the Dongguan Gate to the Grand Canal.
Dongguan Street has been the commercial spine of Yangzhou since the Tang and Song dynasties and was a main route for goods landing from the Grand Canal. The restored street runs from the Dongguan Gate to the Ancient Grand Canal, paved in stone and lined with Ming and Qing shop fronts, former merchants' mansions, workshops and tea houses.
Today it mixes real heritage buildings with tourist shops, but the surrounding lanes remain an active neighbourhood. Early morning, when locals buy breakfast and the stalls are being set up, shows the more authentic side; after dark the lanterns and canal views draw crowds.
