Changshu is a quieter city in the Suzhou area of Jiangsu province, China, about 60 km northeast of Suzhou and set against Yushan hill. The trip takes 45 to 70 minutes: a train from Suzhou to Changshu takes 30 to 45 minutes (CNY 20-40), a coach from Suzhou North takes 60 to 70 minutes (CNY 20-30), and a DiDi takes about 70 minutes (CNY 150-220). From Changshu station, a local bus or taxi reaches the Yushan Scenic Area. Yushan Park (about CNY 30-50, open from around 6:00AM to 5:00PM) climbs the hill through wooded paths and pavilions, with Xingfu Temple, an old Buddhist temple, among the main sights, and the hill's stone walls and lanes echo the old city below. Further from the centre, the Shajiabang scenic area is a reed-marsh wetland with a historical museum and boat tours, and the Shanhu Lake wetland offers lakeside walking. Changshu's old streets have traditional houses, small shops and a local food street. The town is known for beggar's chicken, a whole chicken wrapped in lotus leaf and clay and slow-baked, along with local river dishes. A workable day begins with Yushan Park in the morning, when the paths are cool and quiet, followed by lunch at the food street. The afternoon suits Shajiabang or Shanhu Lake for a wetland walk and boat ride, then an early evening train back to Suzhou. Half a day covers Yushan and the old streets, while a full day adds Shajiabang. The best seasons are March to May and September to November; summer is hot and humid, and winter can be chilly and damp. Weekdays are quiet, whereas weekends and holidays fill up with local visitors. The site is a good choice for travellers wanting hills and gardens without the crowds of central Suzhou. Paths on the hill involve moderate steps but the overall day is easy.
