Yixing, in Wuxi prefecture of Jiangsu province, is known for the purple-clay teapots and also for a group of karst show caves in the hills southwest of the city. Three of the best known are Shanjuan Cave, Zhanggong Cave and Linggu Cave, all open to visitors with lit walkways through chambers of stalactites, stalagmites, columns and underground pools. The caves are usually visited together on a day trip from Yixing city or Wuxi, and the Shanjuan Cave Scenic Area near Zhuling Village is a common starting point. Each cave has an underground route of roughly 0.8-1.5 km and takes about one to two hours to explore. This is classed as easy caving: the routes are developed show-cave paths with steps, handrails and lighting, so no technical caving skills, ropes or certifications are needed. Visitors need only basic mobility, since there are many stairs and some damp, uneven surfaces. Young children and older visitors can generally take part, although anyone with knee or heart conditions may find the stairs tiring. Tickets are sold at the scenic-area ticket offices and cover entry and, where available, a boat or lift section inside the cave. Prices are about ¥70 for Shanjuan, ¥79 for Zhanggong and ¥50 for Linggu. Non-slip shoes are strongly recommended because the floors are wet, and a light jacket is useful since the caves stay cool at roughly the same temperature all year. Most equipment is not required, and visitors can use their own phone light or camera where photography is permitted. Staff at the cave entrances and along the routes monitor the walkways, and the developed paths have marked exits and emergency lighting. In an emergency, visitors can call 120 for medical help or 110 for police, and staff can guide groups to the nearest exit. The caves are open year-round, and their cool interiors make them especially pleasant in summer. Heavy rain can raise water levels and lead to temporary closures of low sections, so visitors should check on the day. Weekends and national holidays are busiest, and early morning visits are calmer.
